Race the rapids or paddle slowly – either way Carlow’s waterways have something for you. The River Barrow is 68km of navigable waterway with 23 Victorian locks.

The River Slaney is a sight to behold with its nature and varied wildlife, from swans and herons to otters and kingfishers.

This makes Carlow’s rivers ideal for cruises on canal boats, kayaking, canoeing and fishing. Indeedanglers seek out the Barrow for its rich resource as a gaming angling river. Catches of the day include roach, perch, sea trout, salmon, roach and brown trout. The salmon and trout season run from March until September.
